Simon, I just made a serious revision to the way the failsafe(s) work. It has not been documented in the wiki yet. The short explanation would be that there is a short failsafe (loss of signal for more than 1.5 seconds) and a long failsafe (loss of signal for more than 20 seconds).

For Auto and Loiter modes you have a choice (through the configuration) of if they will be affected by the failsafe or not. If so then the mode is switched to RTL.

For the lower modes (Manual through FBW-B) the mode is switched to Circle for short failsafe and then switched to RTL for long failsafe. For short failsafe the mode is returned to the original mode if signal is restored, but for long failsafe the mode will remain RTL until you change it.

You might want to rethink the 3 minute part. I can see that 3 minutes might often not be long enough to 'get back home'. I assume the intent is for it go come down in your vicinity if you can't restore comm's. Reply by on May 29, 2011 at 10:07am. Hello, There is no a real problem with the Failsafe.

Rp8d1

I am using a 2.4 Ghz receiver in the MAJA drone, I use a Multiplex RX9-DR MLink. The receiver failsafe is programmed so as to set the channel 8 (or channel 5) in RTL mode and the throttle to minimum. When the transmitter is switched OFF the (Cularis or MAJA) UAV come back to the home position without problem. This is simple and it works very well. Drivers ricoh mp c305spf. I have tested this successfully with my Cularis drone (ArduPilot + ArduIMU) and with the MAJA drone during real flights.

On my receiver (Corona RP8D1), failsafe channel values can be set that the Rx will go to in the event of signal loss.

However, EVERY channel has a failsafe value - it's not like I can set one channel (for example, Throttle) to go low, but leave everything else at 'last known good'. This means that I can set it up so that it will put APM into Throttle Failsafe - but, it will also by definition set the Mode switch to a failsafe value as well. I know that in Throttle Failsafe the APM failsafe definitions override whatever the mode switch is set to, but the behavior is also dependent on what the mode switch was set to before the fail safe event. This 'prior' mode is rather important. Will APM pick up the sudden change to the mode switch when the Rx failsafe kicks in, and count that as the new 'prior' mode? If so, then Throttle Failsafe is not of much use, since I can't be certain APM will truly base its decision on the mode I was in before the fail safe event, or if it will base it off the mode that my Rx switches to in the event of failsafe. That doesn't mean I don't have options still - but I have much fewer.

I think what would be best is if I could program all the channels on my Rx to remain at their last good values, except for throttle, which would go low - but I can't. I could do the equivalent by changing the PPM failsafe, but that's more work. Anyway, I guess I need to do some empirical checking to see what APM picks up first - the Throttle channel going low, or the mode switch changing, and then throttle going low. But I almost wouldn't count on it being consistent, and it makes a big difference. Maybe this is indeed an argument for highlighting failsafe options apart from the Rx settings. Luke. Mine is just finished ready for flight testing, In any mode, including 'manual', if I turn off the tx (rx not enabled for failsafe) Ail and Elev servos stay where they were, where the ESC goes immediately to almost full power! Disconcerting yet seems to be behaving as Doug explained Is this right (latest code)? Jean-Louis I was thinking the same as you, ie use the mpx rx failsafe feature to turn off ESC and enable RTL modes, but doesn't that mean that the motor still bursts into life when the tx is turned off (like when general testing on the bench)?
